Volunteering

Our volunteer drivers provide a lifeline for vulnerable and isolated people in towns and villages, but many more could benefit with the help of new volunteer drivers.

Volunteers can give as little or as much time as they wish, whatever fits around their other commitments. Just a few hours a week can make all the difference.

Volunteer Car Drivers

We are looking for reliable people with a cheerful manner who can pick clients up, using your own car, take them to their chosen destination and then return them home again.

You’ll be helping people who are unable to use public transport and have no private transport available, such as elderly people.

Typically, car journeys are needed for:

  • medical appointments
  • visiting family and friends in hospital or residential homes
  • shopping
  • leisure activities
  • other private business

All our drivers get a mileage allowance and support from our Chief Officer.

Volunteer Minibus Drivers

We need minibus drivers to transport community groups to luncheon clubs, and to enable group members of all ages, to attend social, sporting and educational events and go on day trips.

Our minibuses are operated under a Section 19 Permit legislation, which means that a PSV licence is not required.

All our minibus drivers undertake an initial assessment test and will receive practical on-the-job training as well as on-going support.

FAQs

Will I need to undergo a DBS check?
Yes. Our volunteers come in to contact with vulnerable adults, we therefore require all volunteer car drivers to undergo an Enhanced DBS check, which we pay for.

Do I receive expenses?
Yes. All volunteers receive out of pocket expenses. If using your own car, you will receive £0.45 pence per mile.

I have some endorsements on my driving licence. Can I still volunteer?
This depends on what the endorsements are, and how long ago. Please contact us to discuss this.

Are there any age restrictions?
Car drivers should have 2 years’ driving experience and be over 21 plus. For minibus drivers, you should be over 25 years old (additional restrictions apply to those aged over 70); contact us for details.

Am I insured?
Yes. All our minibuses are fully insured.
When transporting people in your own car, you will be covered under your own policy, with the insurance company’s permission and should not incur additional cost.
